Warm November?

The fall leaves have come and gone and with the leaves comes an anticipation for colder weather...or not. The past week has been surprisingly warm. I went to the last SEC football game versus South Carolina on Saturday and wore a short sleeve shirt and sunscreen. A few weeks ago when we beat Auburn, I remember wishing I had a pair of gloves. Such wacky weather! :)

Let's see...besides the crazy weather the campus is as busy as ever. Potential students are all over campus. The past few weeks I have given 2 campus tours a week, because we have so many interested students. My friends have asked me about the sudden influx of high school students and all I can say is I suppose it's that time of the year of decision making. High school seniors are deciding which colleges to apply to and University seniors are deciding which grad schools are best for them.

The past week and this week the campus has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The German and History departments have invited a variety of guest speakers. I went last week to a lecture about living behind the iron curtain. Today I am going to a lecture about German pop culture. This event is one example of many cultural events the Unversity offers.

I am also looking forward to the Third Eye Blind concert at the Barnhill Arena next week. I have a paper do the day after, so it looks like I am going to have to do some early writing if I don't want to stay up all night after the concert. :)

The last, but definitely not least highlight of November is THANKSGIVING BREAK! Students look forward to a few days of rest and food before they take on their dreaded finals. Thanksgiving is a great time to catch up on reading and homework, although it seems few students actually get around to cracking their books. ;)

Outside the University

If you are ever around the U of A campus, you know there are all kinds of events happening every day, but this post gives you a look into some awesome places to go off campus. :)

  • The Fayetteville Public Library is a great place to study or browse for books. The library offers book discussion groups and also provides a variety of speakers and activities each month. http://faylib.org/
  • The Walton Arts Center is a great source for weekend entertainment if you are interested in the arts. Check out their site for upcoming shows, which often include plays, musicals, comedians, and much more! http://www.waltonartscenter.org/
  • The Fayetteville Farmer's Market is an exciting way to spend a Saturday morning. If you live off campus you may want to purchase some of the tasty home grown vegetables, but even if you aren't looking to buy it is an interesting experience. http://www.fayettevillefarmersmarket.com/calendar.html
  • The War Eagle Mill is another fun location to look around. You can take a tour of the mill and all around the mill are hiking and biking paths. The Fayetteville scenery is very beautiful this time of year! http://www.wareaglemill.com/index.html
  • If you enjoy camping and hiking, Devil's Den State Park isn't far from campus. The park has campgrounds and offers trails anywhere from easy to strenuous. I went to Devil's Den a few days ago to walk around and take pictures of the leaves. It was absolutely breathtaking! http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/devilsden/

These are just a few of the interesting activities Fayetteville has to offer. I plan to write about more places in the future, including local owned restaurants and businesses. :)

October is busy, busy, busy!

October has so much to offer U of A students!

This morning I was up at 5:30 AM at the union to get my free Third Eye Blind tickets! The concert is November 17th and I can't wait! As part of student fees the University always brings two big bands to come play at the Barnhill Arena. Previous years we have had O.A.R., T.I., The Foo Fighters, and John Mayer.

Another exciting thing to look for is the U of A's distinguished lecture series. Next week former Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert is going to speak at the Barhill Arena. Former speaks we have invited include Anderson Cooper, Malcolm Gladwell, Magic Johnson, and George W. Bush Sr.

October also brings a lot of volunteer opportunities. Last Saturday, many university students took part in Make a Difference day. Students had choices of different locations to volunteer at, such as, The Boys and Girls Club and local park clean ups. The Red Cross is also hosting a blood drive at the HPER work out facility as a part of U of A Homecoming. Students can come donate blood and receive Homecoming points for the various organizations they represent. The battle is between Greeks, residence halls, and registered student organizations and it's going to be interesting!

Homecoming activities for next week include a cook off, banner competition, flag football tournment, talent show, step show, parade, and you can't forget the football game! The hogs will play Eastern Michigan at 6 on Halloween night.

As for sports golf, tennis, volleyball and women's soccer are going strong. The women's and men's basketball teams are opening up their practice Friday October 23rd for all of Fayetteville to see! Saturday the hog football team will take on Ole Miss at Oxford after a near win against Florida.

There is so much to do and students also have to remember to study for mid terms and prepare for spring advising! I am off to study as soon as I finish typing this! :)

Welcome potential Fulbright students!

Hello, and welcome to the Fulbright blog! We are happy that you have shown an interest in the Arts and Science College. The purpose of this blog is to answer your questions and show you all the University of Arkansas has to offer!

Right now in Fayetteville, fall is upon us. The leaves are starting to change and the weather is becoming a little cooler. Football season is in full swing, and after a win over the Aggies the Hogs are set to play Auburn this Saturday. For more information about Arkansas football and other sports, be sure to check out http://arkansasrazorbacks.com!

As a senior, I am making preparations for graduation. In a week or so I will pick out my final semester of classes and start applying to law schools. A lot of the students who read this blog are probably seniors in high school. It is a great time to start applying for admissions and scholarships at the University of Arkansas. For more information about Admissions check out http://admissions.uark.edu/students/new/index.php!

Also, be sure to check out all the majors that the Fulbright College has to offer. Don't worry if you aren't 100% sure what you want to major in. As a Freshman I started out undecided. I took a variety of classes I believed I might be interested in, and found out I wanted to major in English.

If you find out that you have so many interests you aren't sure which one to settle on, remember that you can always earn a double major or a minor. I was very interested in Political Science, so I chose it as my minor.

Once again, thank you for visiting the Fulbright blog and be sure to check back often for more interesting updates!

Arkansas in October

Arkansas in October
October is a busy month at the University of Arkansas. Not only are the leaves changing colors and the weather cooling down, but campus-wide events such as homecoming are taking place. This year Homecoming week will be October 26-November 1. Homecoming is an exciting time that brings the entire campus together to take place in the festivities. Homecoming is a competition for the different organizations on campus. Dorms, RSOs (registered student organizations) and Greek organizations are all highly competitive. A few areas that the different organizations can earn points for the competition are:

  • Annual Blood Drive- the most participants gets the most points
  • Pigskin Classic- a flag football tournament
  • Float Competition- for the parade down Dickson street
  • Step Show- a stepping competition performed at Barnhill Arena on Oct. 30
  • Create a Hog- a pumpkin decorating contest
  • Lawn decorations- Decorations on the organization's lawn that best fit the theme

And many more! The Homecoming game will be on November 1st where the Hogs will take on Tulsa. The perfect way to finish up a great week! During half time of the game the winners of Homecoming week will be announced along with the Homecoming Court members that are chosen by a campus vote. Homecoming is one of the best events that the University of Arkansas has to offer. It is a time for the entire university and its alumni to come together and participate in the festivities!

Hey There, Prospective Fulbright Students!

Deciding on a college can be one of the most stressful decisions a high school student must make. The Fulbright Ambassadors would like to help make your decision an easy one! We are here to answer questions and provide guidance for anyone with an interest in Arts & Sciences.

Right now in Fayetteville the leaves are beginning to change. This is by far my favorite time of year! Being an avid photographer, I will try to go out and capture some of the beauty on campus and post some pics on here!

Besides studying for tests and writing papers there is so much to do! Football is in full swing and whether you are a fan or not, everyone seems to enjoy the games. This weekend we play Auburn away and Kentucky in Lexington the following weekend. Our next home game we be on the 21st against Ole Miss and that is sure to be a good one!

Intermurals are also starting up. I am a proud member of a co-ed flag football team! We play every Wednesday and I am attempting to become an awesome wide receiver.

On October 11th the U of A is preparing for Ready Razorback! An important event where hundreds of potential students come to spend their Saturday with us and learn more about what life is like at the University of Arkansas.
https://www.uark.edu/admin/admiss/website/visit/visit/openhouse/index.php

Make a Difference Day is October 18th. This is a day when students all over the campus devote their Saturday to volunteering somewhere in Northwest Arkansas. I am going to help clean up at the Boys and Girls Club here in Fayetteville.

The rest of October is going to be full of fun exciting activities! My birthday is this month and to celebrate I am going to go see a concert at a local club here in Fayetteville. One of my favorite things about Fayetteville is I am always encountering new places to spend my weekends!

I hope that all is going well in your college search! If you have any questions at all don't HESITATE to post one on here. It can be a question about a major, campus life, activities, etc. We will be happy to help you in any way we can!

Keep enjoying the pleasant fall weather! :)

fall in fayetteville

there is a wonderful thing about fayetteville and it is how the trees change here in the fall. since i'm from texas i had NEVER seen trees the colors they are here! it was a surprise to me that fall didn't just mean things were brown and cold-ish like they can be at home.

with the wonderful weather fayetteville has a lot to offer as far as outdoor recreation goes. there are bike trails everywhere, parks in every part of town, and Old Main lawn also serves as a great place to study outside, play frisbee, or hang out after class. Wilson Park is a favorite of students because it is only a ten or fifteen minute walk from campus, depending on where you are. there is a running trail, picnic tables, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, garden areas, and plenty of room to take a blanket, lay in the grass and study (or maybe fall asleep...)
http://www.accessfayetteville.org/government/parks_and_recreation/index.html

the University of Arkansas also has an Outdoor Connection Center, where you can rent everything from kayaks to sleeping bags, or even go rock-climbing in the HPER. this makes it especially easy to head out camping at beaver lake or devil's den or some of the other campsites only an hour or two from fayetteville.
http://imrs.uark.edu/2841.htm

hopefully this gives you a little taste of the fall in fayetteville! if you can afford to take a weekend off or miss a football game (which is definitely difficult) taking a camping trip or just a day excursion to a new park can be really fun!
